Coverage
What is insured, what is specifically excluded, and which extensions are optional?
Business insurance · Cost
Understanding what drives the premium helps you see where the cost comes from and which choices, such as the excess or limits, change it.
In brief: The cost of business insurance in South Africa depends on what the business does, where it operates, what it needs to insure and for how much, the security in place, its claims history and the excess chosen. There is no standard price: two businesses with the same turnover can pay very different premiums. The way to find the actual cost is a quote based on accurate information.

Start with high-level facts. Do not submit sensitive identity, financial or claim evidence through an initial web enquiry.
Compare carefully
A useful comparison does more than compare premiums. Put the relevant limits, excesses, key exclusions, claims conditions and service steps side by side before accepting a policy.
What is insured, what is specifically excluded, and which extensions are optional?
Which standard or additional excesses could apply, and are they manageable?
Which disclosures, valuations, security steps or maintenance duties must be met?
Who must be notified, how quickly, and what evidence could be needed?

There is no standard price. The premium depends on the business activity, location, the sections and sums insured, security, claims history and the excess. A quote based on accurate information is the only reliable way to know the cost.
Higher-risk activities, high-crime or flood-prone locations, high values or limits, weak security, previous claims and a low excess commonly increase the premium.
Options include improving security and fire protection, choosing a higher excess you can afford, keeping sums insured accurate and reviewing sections you no longer need. Weigh any saving against the gaps it could create.
Often, yes. Turnover is commonly used to rate sections such as liability and business interruption, so a change in turnover can change the premium.
Not necessarily, but a lower premium can reflect lower limits, a higher excess or fewer sections. Compare what each quote includes, not only the price.
